when I was in high school, one of my music teachers taught us that most popular music up until the Beatles largely followed a 1-4-5 chord structure and they completely broke that paradigm in popular music. That was his explanation for why they mattered so much. I'm not sure how true it was, but it's epic lore!
I’m with you, Scott. And I, for example, love Radiohead, etc., but believe they couldn’t have emerged so creatively without the giant contributions of the Beatles.
